Hey!
So Valentine's Day is coming up fast...a lot of us have a dance to attend! If you've never slow danced with someone before, you need to be pre-informed.
At the dance, you'll be jammin' out to some catchy song (Thrift Shop!) with your group of friends and all of a sudden the music gets slooooooooow. Your stomach will most likely get butterflies all of a sudden because everywhere you look, there's going to be people dancing together. Don't sweat it though!
The Question
If a guy you really don't like asks you to dance, and he's absolutely disgustinggg you can say no if you want, just make sure you're nice about it. You can also take the pity route, and just go for it. You'll make him really happy. As I said, you can say no, just say "I'm going to sit this one out" or "I was just heading to the washroom, sorry" or something like that. If your crush asks you to dance, please try not to faint or squeal with joy. A simple "sure!" should do the trick. And who said girls can't ask the guy? Go for it! Just say "hey, want to dance?". If he says he's already saving that one for someone else, you can ask him to save the next one for you. You can also get a friend to ask the guy for you, just make sure that you and your friend don't keep begging him to dance with you, because you'll scare him off.
Body Placement
You can do whatever's comfortable but this is how most people dance in junior high: you guys stand across from each other and he puts his hands on your waist. Don't be shy to tell him to move his hands up if he's just a little too low. You put your hands on his shoulders, or you can lock your fingers behind his neck/upper back. If you're both okay with it, you can rest your head on his shoulder and dance like hugging. Then you just sway back and forth. Don't worry if you're sweaty or clammy, he might be too. It is a dance after all.
Height Differences
If you're taller than your date: don't hunch. You'll look like a humpback and make him feel really insecure and short. If you're shorter than him, you can lean into him with your head resting on his chest or rest your hands up on his back instead of his shoulders.
Where to Look
You can look at other people dancing together and smile at your friends and stuff. You can also look at your date. I tend to do both so that I'm not creepy by staring at him for the full two and a half minutes and so that he doesn't think that everyone else is more interesting than he is. If your chin is on his shoulder, it really doesn't matter where you look.
People Around You
His friends and your friends will most likely be making fun of you guys: kissy faces, hearts and winking. Just ignore them and don't let them ruin your special moment. Speaking from experience: don't let your date get mad at other people who bump into you. This prevents a fist fight from occuring in the middle of the gym. Speaking from experience, you guys.
After
Your friends will most likely rush at you when the song is over and drag you away. In some cases this is good as it saves you from awkwardness. You can smile at your date and say a sweet "thanks". In some cases, he'll bring you closer and hug you for a few seconds, and in some other cases, he might give you a kiss.
Good luck!
